What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram (echo) uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of your heart’s movement. During an echo test, your healthcare provider will place a hand-held wand on your chest to take pictures of your heart’s valves and chambers. This helps to visualize the pumping action of your heart to show the blood flow through the heart and valves.
There is no form of radiation used in an echocardiogram therefore, it will differ from tests like X-rays and CT scans. Other names for this test are heart ultrasound and heart sonogram.
What is a Stress Echocardiogram?
In order to check how the heart responds to physical activity, a stress echocardiogram may be done before and after exercise. This type of test will be ordered if your provider suspects that you have coronary artery disease. If physical activity is not an option, medication can be used to induce a faster heart rate.
What is an Electrocardiogram?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most common test used to evaluate the heart. An ECG machine is connected to electrodes that are placed on the skin using small plastic patches. The electrical activity that is generated by the heart is analyzed and can even be printed out. No electricity is generated by the ECG machine.
ECGs may be ordered if you are experiencing chest pain, have irregular heartbeats, or to evaluate heart-related problems (shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, etc).
How are Holter Monitors Used?
If an ECG or EKG is inconclusive about the condition of the heart, a Holter monitor may be worn to record the heart's rhythm. The Holter monitor is a device that can be worn by the patient to detect irregular heartbeats.
24 Hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring
If your provider suspects that you may have hypertension, the use of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) may be used. A small cuff is placed on the upper arm that will inflate every 15-30 minutes over the course of 24 hours to take your blood pressure reading. Your provider will analyze the information provided to determine your blood pressure variability.
