Once the calculus layer is removed the teeth become exposed to air and foods which can lead to the teeth being sensitive or a few days to couple of weeks.  This is one of the most common side effects. This duration and intensity of this temporary side-effect is dependent on the patient’s gum health.  Patient’s with regular dental care may experience no to very minimal sensitivity as compared to those who have not seen a dentist for years.

4.    Swollen Gums: Scraping of deposits and bacterial layer, may result in slight gum swelling which will last for few days and usually gets better on its own.

5.    Gap Between Teeth: There are always small space between teeth. Food deposits in these areas which could lead to gums receding and giving space for plaque and calculus to deposit. After a good teeth cleaning, these food and bacterial deposits are removed, and small gaps/spaces may become noticeable. Sometime gums grow back and fill up these spaces.

How to take care of these side-effects?

• Your dentist or hygienist may recommend using an anti-sensitivity or desensitizing toothpaste.  There are many kinds of such toothpastes available over the counter.
• Your dental office may recommend antimicrobial mouthwash. Using the recommended mouthwash may help lower the gum disease causing bacteria in your mouth.
• You can do warm salt-water rinses 2-3 times in a day for few days. This will also protect from bacterial invasion and swelling.
